Upcoming US acting talents Paul Dano and Zooey Deschanel team up in “Gigantic”, an offbeat love story set in New York City.
Dano, who has already made a name for himself in hits such as “Little Miss Sunshine” and “There Will be Blood” plays Brian Weathersby, a 28 year-old mattress salesman who dreams of adopting a child from China. His love interest is Harriet Lolly, played by Zooey Deschanel: “I think they are two people who are a bit lost,” says Dano. “I think Zooey’s character has this umbilical relationship with her father. And I think Brian is looking for a purpose and I think part of that is also the baby which gives him something to ground his life around. And so it’s not a match made in heaven situation.” Throughout the film, Brian is violently attacked by a homeless man, who is the product of his imagination. Brian’s wounds, however, are real – reflecting director Matt Aselton’s comments when he says he is interested in stories in which reality and absurdity cross paths. Dano describes these scenes as difficult but Aselton, who is signing his first movie, says they are central to the film. “Those scenes probably were my least favorite to shoot,” says Dano. “I guess it’s funny because they look exciting in the film. But to shoot them is quite tedious.” “Yeah, and the last thing you want to do is put your actor in some sort of harms way,” Aselton adds. “But it was pretty crucial to those fight scenes that it be Paul. He’s getting tossed around and it’s rough. “ Already out in the US and Canada, “Gigantic” is on release in the UK this week, and will be out in the Netherlands and in Portugal in the autumn.
