Protest outside Italian G8 meeting

Outside the venue hundreds of people staged a protest against the G8.

The demonstrators are said to have been largely made up of anti-capitalist and communist groups. They say the finance ministers should not have given bail-out money to the banks. One of the protest organisers said: “We want a radical change in the economic principles at the heart of the G8. They think money should go the bankers and to the economies in crisis. For us it’s the opposite. We think they should give money to the poor and redistribute their wealth around the world.” Banners read: “Cancel the debt” and “Another world is not only possible, it’s also necessary”. Security was high at the G8 venue, with hundreds of police deployed.
