France and Germany have backed Jose Manuel Barroso’s bid for a second five year term as President of the EU Commission.
The full seal of approval came as both leaders held talks in Paris ahead of an EU summit next week. German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave Barroso her full backing saying: ‘‘France and Germany support the candidacy of Jose Manuel Barroso. But we must also talk about his programme. We believe this has to be very closely coordinated with the parliament.’‘ Sarkozy also gave the current EU President his endorsement and said Europe needed to engage voters. ‘‘The two are of us are well aware of the political situation in Europe. We see the low turnout and we need to respond to that. We also see a large number of Europeans are disillusioned and we know perfectly the responsibility that’s on our shoulders. Merkel said she hoped a vote on Barroso’s second mandate would take place next month.
