The outgoing EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has confirmed he wants another five years in the job.
He is expected to be challenged by the Left, but earned a ringing endorsement from Germany. Chancellor Angela Merkel gave him her full backing as Barroso visited Berlin. ‘‘I have expressed my support for Jose Manuel Barroso this morning. That will natuarally not change. That will be the case in the days to come, therefore I’m talking about continuity,’‘ Merkel said. Barroso announced his decision to run again earlier in Brussels. ‘‘I am therefore honoured that the President of the European Council has today asked me if he can put forward my name for a second mandate in view of the consultation he will be making in preparation for the next European Council. I have agreed to this request,” Barroso said. Barroso enjoys support among Europe’s centre right parties, which made big gains in Sunday’s European elections, and among some left-wing leaders. But, he isn’t popular with everyone. The resurgent Greens and the splintered socialists remain hostile.
