Lebanon governing coalition claims victory in poll

Pro-Sunni supporters take to the streets of Beirut to celebrate the victory of Lebanon’s pro-Western governing coalition in a parliamentary election.

A politician close to the rival Hezbollah-led bloc, supported by Syria and Iran, has conceded defeat. Said Hariri’s victorious March the 14th Alliance could even see its parliamentary majority increase: “Congratulations to every woman and man who waited in line today to cast their vote. I have no doubt that the martyr Rafik al-Hariri and all the martyrs are all looking down on us in contentment, knowing that Lebanon will be alright. There are no winners or losers in this election. The only winner is democracy in Lebanon. And the biggest victor is Lebanon.” he told a meeting of his supporters. The security services say one person was wounded by gunfire in the northern city of Tripoli and there were brawls between rival supporters in some places, but there were no reports of serious fighting.
