EU election: low turnout expected in Czech Republic

Turnout for the European elections is also expected to be low in the Czech Republic, where voting was spread over two days in a bid to draw people to the polls.

The Czech Republic is allocated 22 out of the EU parliament’s 736 seats. The vote here is widely seen a test of satisfaction with the government ahead of a general election in October, which is expected to pit ousted liberal premier Topolanek against the opposition Social Democrats. It is little surprise, therefore, that the ballot was overshadowed by domestic rather than EU issues.
