On the eve of European and local elections pressure on Gordon Brown to step down has reached unprecedented levels.

The fallout from the expenses scandal combined with cabinet resignations has resulted in question marks over the British prime minister’s leadership never before seen. The Communities Secretary Hazel Blears became the latest to quit the government. She is the second high-profile member to leave in as many days.
