“I’d like to know: What will the Middle East’s relations with Europe be like for the future, and how will this influence the situation in the Middle East?”
“I am Eva Gross from the Institute for European Studies at the Free University of Brussels.
“The European Union has identified the Middle East as one of the key strategic objectives in its foreign policy and it does have a number of political, economic and also state-building contributions to make in its foreign policy towards the Middle East.
“There is one caveat, and that is the European Union is not the primary international actor in the Middle East peace process, and that of course is the United States.
“So whatever the European Union does in support of the Middle East peace process, it is to a large extent in support of US policy and of course given the recent change in the US administration and the advent of the Obama presidency, at the moment there is a bit of, let’s say, redefinition of the US position towards the Middle East peace process and of course it impacts the way the EU acts towards the region.”
