It was with a smile and a bounce in her step that German Chancellor Angela Merkel came out of the drawn-out talks over the future of Opel to affirm the company would prosper under new ownership.“I think this is going to become a European structure within which everyone will find something for them. Of course, it’s a highly unusual construction as the German government has led talks with the American government, but with the goal that this becomes a European structure under the leadership of Adam Opel, and that is what is important,” she said. Merkel has also struck a job, and potential vote-saving blow for her party ahead of the autumn elections.
