The World is watching North Korea as tensions across the peninsula heighten. South Korea is nervous following a direct threat from its neighbour if the country goes ahead to join a US plan to check vessels suspected of carrying weapons of mass destruction.
And Pyongyang’s actions have caused Russia to speak out. From Moscow, there are reports the country is taking precautionary security measures because it fears mounting tensions could escalate to war. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: “The (United Nations) Security Council must come out firmly and must work out those measures that would prevent a further dilution of the (nuclear) non-proliferation regime.” The defiant gestures appear evidence that the reclusive North Korea maintains a deaf ear as the superpowers continue to look for a diplomatic way to ease fears in the region. Moscow and Washington hope for a return to six-party talks aimed at ending North Korea’s nuclear programme. But the military grandstanding goes on in the North with Russia’s security moves raising further the stakes in the stand-off.
