There will be plenty of sore heads in Catalonia today but plenty more happy hearts after Barcelona’s victory in the Champions League final over Manchester United. The win completes an unprecedented treble for the club, which had already clinched the Spanish league and cup this season. It is the third time Barca has been crowned champions of Europe.
Among the hundreds of thousands of revellers though there was a small minority that spoiled the party. Clashes in Barcelona city centre left more than 150 people injured, while police made 119 arrests. In Manchester immediately after the match, the fans’ mood was as flat as their team’s performance. But for all their disappointment, there was general recognition that the better team had won. As well as an abundant supply of beer, United fans took comfort in the knowledge that they are still English champions and that there is always next year.
