Inquiry after Morocco festival ends in 11 deaths


A music festival in Morocco has ended in tragedy with 11 people killed and dozens injured in a crowd surge.

It happened as a concert by the singer Abdeliziz Stati drew to a close. Thousands of people hurrying to leave apparently pushed over a fence. The victims were trampled by others trying go out by the same exit. The concert in Rabat was the climax of Morocco’s landmark Mawazine festival. Survivors spoke of panic inside the stadium. Relatives gathered outside local hospitals for news of their loved ones. One man said: “My daughter is intensive care and I can’t find the words to express my feelings.” There had been crowd safety problems at an earlier festival event, which was captured on film by Euronews. No one was seriously hurt in this incident but it highlights the difficulties the authorities faced. The Interior Ministry has said it has opened an investigation into the deaths. Mawazine, which is backed by King Mohammed, is billed as the country’s biggest cultural event and attracts tens of thousands of fans every year.
