Celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of Germany’s constitution have continued near the landmark Brandenburg Gate.
In other parts of Berlin around a quarter of a million Germans gathered to celebrate their country rising from the ashes of World War 2. Germany’s President Horst Koehler has been marking his election win Saturday. His re-election by a special federal assembly in the Reichstag gave Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats and their conservative allies an important morale boost 4 months before September’s parliamentary election. Meanwhile more than a thousand radical left wing demonstrators marched through Berlin protesting at the 60th anniversary celebrations. There were a few minor scuffles but nothing on the scale of recent May Day protests. Their banners read get rid of capitalism ..get rid of the state. The scale of the police presence kept disturbances down to a minimum.
