Germany has been celebrating the 60th anniversary of its constitution with a giant light show on the Reichstag building in Berlin.
It was a time for reflection on Germany’s achievements in the last 6 decades … an examination of where it is going in the twenty first century…as well as a time for relection on its past. Germany’s President Horst Koehler took the anniversary as an opportunity of saying not all Germany’s expectations and wishes had been fulfilled. This a reference to unemployment made even worse by the credit crunch and the take over of failed German car giant Opel. He said Germany was aware of the new and great challenges ahead. Koehler is seeking another 5 year term in office. His nearest rival is Gesine Schwan of the Social Democrats. She’s an academic and political economist. Keohler though remains favourite to win in the Presdiential poll on May 23
