Spain’s ruling Socialists have set a caring tone for launch of their European Parliament election campaign: Care about voting or watch out for the opposition. Opinion survey shows the Socialists and the conservative People’s Party (PP) neck-and-neck.
A Socialist video portrays various right-wing voters’ opinions… on immigrants taking jobs, only room for one religion, each person paying for individual healthcare, doubting climate change, an assertion that homosexuality is an illness, support for sacking people without severance pay and belief in the death penalty. The video’s bottom line says the problem is not what they think, it is what they will vote for. The government polling centre said enthusiasm is low but more than 53 percent of Spaniards are expected to cast ballots. While the right wing has been tarnished by corruption scandals, the ruling left are struggling with the recession and soaring unemployment.
