An Indonesian military transport plane carrying 109 people has crashed in East Java on a flight from the capital Jakarta killing at least 64. A local official in Madiun said the Hercules aircraft was completely destroyed, with only the tail-plane left intact. The official said the transporter ploughed into several houses, and some people on the ground had also been killed. But doctors have been treating survivors for concussion and broken bones. Rescuers were hampered in their efforts because the plane came to a halt on the edge of a paddy field, about five kilometres from an air force base.
