Thousands more Sri Lankan civilians have escaped the country’s war zone and joined others in relative safety.
They were trapped with many others in a tiny coastal strip where Tamil Tiger rebels are holding out against a Sri Lanka army onslaught.
Aeriel surveillance images appear to show around 5,000 of them wading across a lagoon to land held by government troops. Some made the short trip in boats and others 12 injured people were said to have been rescued by helicopter.
The video illustrates the desperate plight of the thousands of civilians trapped in the combat zone. The UN believes they’re being held against their will. The Tigers, who are fighting for a separate Tamil state, have refused to lay down their weapons, and the government too has been criticised by the international community for not calling a total truce to allow civilians to escape.
