Urgent talks involving politicians, local groups and the police are underway in Portugal, after a third night of rioting outside Lisbon. At least twelve people were arrested in the Bella Vista district of Setubal as gangs of youths protested the death of one of their friends after a police chase.
The dead youth was from Bella Vista, but was shot by police on the Algarve after an attack on a bank cash machine. The Bella Vista protests turned violent with several cars and motorbikes set on fire and shots fired at a local police station. This morning police were patrolling the streets, but said the area was calm.
