French jailers extend protest

French prison wardens are threatening to extend their protests over poor working conditions and overcrowded jails.

For the third consecutive day prison guards set up barricades outside 120 jails to prevent inmate transfers. Although jailers cannot legally refuse to work, union leaders say they have plenty of options, such as blocking visits. David Calogine, a UFAP union leader, said: “Despite the critical situation in our prisons, the government hasn’t promised any more staff and we’re not satisfied with the proposals of Justice Minister Rachida Dati.” Human rights groups have repeatedly criticised French prisons as dirty and overcrowded and highlighted conditions in some jails where as many as four or five inmates are held in a single cell.
