Spanish jobless hits record

The number of people out of work in Spain rose to a record four million in the first three months of the year.

The jobless rate hit 17.4 percent of the working population, up from 13.9 percent in the fourth quarter of last year: that is the highest unemployment rate in the European Union. But it eased in April due to seasonal factors, such as hiring over Easter, and the impact of a government public works plan.
