Silvio Berlusconi has hit back at his wife for her very public demands for a divorce, insisting she owes him an apology.
The Italian prime minister told a national newspaper that he thought there was little chance his 19-year marriage could be saved. It came just a day after he declared the matter should remain private and not end up on the front pages. Veronica Lario used the press to criticise his reported decision to field attractive but inexperienced female candidates for the European elections. Then on Sunday she was again quoted by newspapers, accusing him of “frequenting minors” after he was seen at the 18th birthday party of a family friend. Now Berlusconi’s reaction has made the headlines. He claims his wife fell into a media trap set by his left-wing rivals and says she should apologise to him in public.
