Obama's gift on first 100 days in office

On his 100th day in charge at the oval office, US President Barack Obama has been given a boost after the dramatic defection of a senior Republican to the Democrats.

The switch of Senator Arlen Specter means he becomes the 59th Democrat in the 100 seat Senate — just one short of the magic majority needed to stop Republicans blocking controversial legislation. Obama said: “I would like to think that Arlen’s decision reflects a recognition that this administration is open to many different ideas and many different points of view, that we seek cooperation and common ground and that in these 100 days we’ve begun to move this nation in the right direction.” While the White House is dismissing the 100 days as an artificial gauge created by the media, many analysts are using the milestone to access Obama’s new approach on policies such as the economy, climate change and relations with Iran.
