EU moves on a coordinated responce to outbreak

The EU has launched a coordinated response to deal with the threat of outbreaks of swine flu in Europe.

Officials have held meetings to discuss surveillence and monitoring measures across the union and are discussing supplies of antiviral drugs with the pharmaceutical industry. Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou said: “Experience gained in recent years has put us in a much stronger position. We have more robust surveillance and alert mechanisms in place. Nobody should underestimate the situation but there is no reason to panic either.” The EU commission has also decided there is no need at this stage to impose any formal travel restrictions because of the flu outbreak. But Commissioner Vassiliou added that she was personally in favour of avoiding non-essential travel to areas affected by the virus.More about:
