Turkish police are laying siege to an apartment in Istanbul where three people were reportedly killed during a raid on alleged members of a far-left militant group. Several other people — police and civilians — were injured in the ensuing gun battle.
Heavily armed police tried to storm the apartment in the city centre early this morning. Istanbul’s governor was quoted as saying it was one of more than 60 raids carried by security forces on suspected militants overnight. A TV cameraman was among those hit, but his condition remains unclear. The governor said the operation targeted militants suspected of planning to carry out what he described as “sensational attacks”.
