Mexicans taking precautions and turning to prayer

Faced with the seemingly growing threat of a highly contagious virus, few people in Mexcio are taking any chances. Having started in the capital, large swathes of the country are now praying the outbreak will swiftly be brought to an end.

Millions are staying indoors but in some areas, despite pleas by authorities not to congreate, many people have gathered in churches in search of security. One man said: “I’m wearing a surgical mask and trying to wash my hands as many times as I can. We’ve disinfected and cleaned the house because we’re worried about the situation.” In the United States, President Barack Obama has appealed for calm. He said the government’s decision to declare a public health emergency was a “precautionary tool” that will give officials the resources needed to meet the threat. Canada has become the third country to confirm human cases of swine flu with officials reporting that six people have been taken ill.
