A suicide bomber has killed 9 Sunni Arab militiamen and wounded 31 at an Iraqi army post south of the capital Bagdhad.
The men were queuing to collect overdue pay cheques when they died. The US sponsored Sunni patrolmen, or Sahwas, have been crucial in reducing the violence in the country after they turned on al Qaeda and other insurgent groups. But relations between the group and the Shi’ite Iraqi government is showing signs of strain following the arrest of a number of their leaders for past crimes. The US paid their salary until recently but that has now shifted to the Iraqi government.
