In an Easter tradition dating back almost 50 years, tens of thousands of German peace activists have taken to the streets across the country. They rallied near military bases in more than 70 towns.
The event has a carnival atmosphere but the message is serious. One marcher said: “We only can solve wars, conflicts and differences of opinion peacefully. War was never a solution.” Some voiced opposition to the war in Afghanistan, while others had particular criticism for their own country. Another participant said: “The huge number of wars is very disturbing. We feel for the victims, suffering from war. They are not taking place here. But Germany is the third or fourth biggest producer of weapons. And these weapons are going somewhere.” The protests were also against poverty and human rights abuses. Critics say the event highlights major concerns without offering any real solutions.
