Survivors of Italy’s earthquake have been returning to their ruined homes to try to salvage what is left of their belongings.
But, with many buildings unsafe and amid reports of looting, police are keeping a close eye on comings and goings in the shattered city of L’Aquila. While there are conflicting accounts about the extent of theft, homeless residents can be forgiven for wanting to put what is theirs out of easy reach. There have been claims that property is being targeted by looters who have converged on the devastated region from across the country. Police have increased their patrols on the streets and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi says authorities will intervene if necessary.
