Voting in Slovakia is underway in a run-off election to decide the country’s next president.
Opposition presidential candidate Iveta Radicova posed for the cameras to cast her ballot. Polls suggest she will harness solid support. However, it is Slovakia’s current president Ivan Gasparovic who’s is clear favourite to win. In office since 2004 the incumbent candidate polled around 46 percent of the vote in last month’s first round. Hit hard by the current global financial slump, the Central European country has seen large scale job cuts. Despite the post of president being largely ceremonial, Gasparovic has been backed by Slovakia’s prime minister leading to speculation that today’s vote is more a test of the government’s popularity and handling of the country’s economy.
