NATO leaders agreed unanimously on Saturday to appoint Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen as the next head of the alliance after Turkey dropped its objections.

Turkey had objected to the nomination due to his handling of a 2006 crisis over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in a Danish newspaper. Ankara says it agreed to the appointment after US President Barack Obama promised that one of Rasmussen’s deputies would be a Turk. Afghanistan was the other main item on the agenda at the two day Franco-German NATO summit – 3000 extra European troops will be sent on short term missions. Outgoing NATO chief Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said: “We have established a Nato training mission in Afghanistan to oversee higher level training for the Afghan National Army and training and mentoring for the Afghan police. We will provide more trainers and more mentors for the Afghan police. We will deploy the forces necessary to support the upcoming elections in Afghanistan.”
