Gunman opens fire on immigrants in US

Fourteen people are now confirmed dead after man opened fire in an immigration services building in the US town of Binghamton.

The gunman is believed to be among the dead. A further 26 people were injured, four of them critically. Witnesses say the man used a high-powered rifle in the attack. Binghamton is a small town in New York State. The man burst into the building where people were receiving citizenship lessons and randomly began shooting. Matt Ryan, Mayor of Binghamton warned of the ordeal facing the victim’s relatives. “This is going to be tough on those families who have victims, many of them are originally not from this country and we want to make sure that a process begins in a way that is fair to those families so please respect the families.” The American Civic Association which owns the building, helps immigrants and refugees with issues such as resettlement and provides translators. Police are trying to piece togther exactly what happened – the gunman is yet to be identified and a motive found. Such incidents have become all too frequent in the US where the right to own weapons for self defence is widely supported and guns are easily available. Last month a man killed eight people at a nursing home in North Carolina.
