Albania and Croatia welcomed into NATO

Albania and Croatia become the 27th and 28th members of NATO at the alliance’s 60th anniversary summit.

Both countries were welcomed into the fold by US President Barack Obama and he opened the door for more countries to join if they meet NATO standards and can make a contribution to allied security. Albania, one of the poorest countries in Europe, applied to join in 1992 and the move is hugely popular in Tirana. Both Croatia and Albania already have troops on NATO missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
