A burst dam on the outskirts of the Indonesian capital Jakarta has claimed the lives of at least fifty people. The death toll was expected to rise as police and rescue services continued their search of the area. Several houses were completely swept away and around 400 engulfed by torrential muddy water. The dam on Lake Situ Gintung, south west of Jakarta, broke in the early hours while most people were sleeping. Although a siren did sound, witnesses said the speed of the water was like being hit by a Tsunami – there was very little anyone could do. Several hours of heavy rain in the area are thought to have over loaded the lake causing the dam to burst.
