The US Secretary of State has acknowledged the role America plays in Mexico’s vicious drugs war which saw over 6,000 gang killings last year.
Hillary Clinton is in Mexico City to discuss US plans to beef up its border security with Mexico in an attempt to solve what is now considered a joint problem.
“The Mexican government made clear to us its urgent need for additional helicopters to take on the drug traffickers and we are responding and I’m pleased to announce that the Obama administration, working closely with Congress, intends to provide more than $80 million in urgently needed funding for Black Hawk helicopters for Mexican law enforcement,” she said.
Crushing the drug cartels is high on the agenda of Mexican President Felipe Calderon as the bloodshed discourages investors and kills tourism.
The Obama administration plans to ask Congress for a further 50 million euros to help stem the flow of drugs, arms and cash between the neighbours.
