The chairman of Turkey’s Grand Unity party, Muhsin Yazicioglu, is missing after a helicopter carrying him and five other people crashed during campaigning for the upcoming local elections.
The helicopter was on its way from the southern province of Kahramanmaras to Yozgat in the centre of the country, but no serach and rescue teams have been able to find the crash site due to bad weather. A journalist on board telephoned the IHA news agency to say it seemed all on board had died, and his legs were badly injured, before his signal broke up. Prime Minister Erdogan suspended his election campigning on hearing the news, as did a number of other political parties. Members of the Grand Unity party protested outside the Interior Ministry that the wreck still had not been found 24 hours after the crash.
