France is mourning one of the biggest stars of its music scene.
Singer Alain Bashung, 61, had been suffering from lung cancer. He has died just two weeks after adding to his collection of prestigious “Victoires de la musique” awards. With the 1980 hit “Gaby, oh Gaby”, Bashung first conquered the French charts. A long career followed in which he achieved what many musicians only dream of, combining commercial success with an artistic prowess that won him widespread acclaim. As if that was not enough, he also pursued a parallel career as an actor, appearing in more than a dozen films. Reflecting the singer’s stature, French President Nicolas Sarkozy is among those to have paid tribute following news of Alain Bashung’s death.
