In the United States, a gunman went on a deadly killing spree in Alabama. After a 20 kilometre car chase, the rampage ended with eleven people dead including the gunman and his mother; the wife of a local policeman and their three-month-old baby.
27-year-old Michael McLendon killed two people at a supermarket. Another died at the wheel of his car as McLendon fired indiscriminately during the chase. Kirk Adams, the Geneva County District Attorney, said: “He intended to kill a lot more at his old company and if not for law enforcement stepping in at that point, I don’t know what we’d be looking at.” McLendon began the killing in the small town of Samson in south-east Alabama, before leading police on a car chase to Geneva nearby. Police say they do not know why he launched his deadly rampage. A statement said patrols had responded to at least four separate shooting incidents involving a lone gunman. It said McLendon died from a self-inflicted gunshot.
