As more grizzly details emerge about the teenager behind the attack, questions are being raised about Germany’s gun control laws. After raiding his home, detectives discovered his father was a member of a gun club and legally owned 15 firearms. One parent described the horror: “What can I say, I don’t understand it anymore, I’m sorry. My daughter is in tenth grade and witnessed it all. She’s at home now shivering and crying. She and her friend only escaped by jumping out of a window. Her friend is in hospital and we hope she didn’t hurt her back. What can I say, I’m in shock myself.” Among students there was surprise that such events could occur in their small town. “Nothing’s ever happened before in this school. At the start I thought it was just something strange happening in the chemistry lab,” said one student. Germany’s twice toughened its gun ownership laws. But with his parents legally owning firearms, the restrictions would not have prevented this latest tragedy.
