More than a dozen firearms are reported to have been recovered at the gunman’s home. Police say the attacker was a 17-year-old former student. Dressed in black combat gear he opened fire in two classrooms at the school and then fled the scene.

Helicopters and hundreds of police joined in the hunt for the gunman after Germany’s worst school shooting in seven years. The school has been named as Albertville high school. In 2006, a man opened fire at a school in the western town of Emsdetten, wounding at least 11 people before committing suicide. In April 2002, Germany suffered its worst school shooting: a gunman killed 17 people, including himself, at a high school in the eastern city of Erfurt.
