Lower pollutant emissions look set to be required of some 52 000 industrial installations throughout the EU, but with more flexible application. The European Parliament has backed a Commission proposal to update and strengthen existing rules, fitting seven EU directives into one.
The overhaul aims to reduce the administrative burden on industry and public authorities, and adapt emission limits to take account of local circumstances. A vast range of industry sectors are covered, from waste incineration, metals, chemicals and paper to processed food, oil refineries and large-scale pig and poultry farms. The parliament suggests relaxing rules on reporting and inspections, while calling for better provision of information to the public.
