Zimbabwe's MDC calls for better security for PM

Zimbabwe’s MDC party has called for better security for the prime minister who was hurt in a horrific road accident which killed his wife, Susan.

Initial reports say Morgan Tsvangirai’s vehicle was struck by an oncoming truck whose driver was asleep at the wheel. Mr Tsvangirai suffered head and neck wounds but has now left hospital and has been flown to Botswana to recover. Earlier Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe visited his old rival in hospital as several world leaders expressed their concern. Mrs Tsvangari was killed after being thrown out of the vehicle which rolled over three times. The crash happened 30 miles south of the capital Harare as the Tsvangirai couple were heading towards their rural home. Mrs Tsvangirai was very popular with MDC supporters and they would often affectionately call her “mother, mother” at rallies. She avoided the political spotlight but always stood by her husband throughout his ordeals as Robert Mugabe’s most determined opponent. The funeral is next week.
