The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov have held their first substantive talks since Clinton took over at the State Department. Each agreed their meeting had been a success.
“We think this is a fresh start, not only to improve our bilateral relationship, but to lead the world in important areas, particularly in respect to nuclear weapons and nuclear security,” said Clinton.
Lavrov said the problems the two nations face are not insurmountable.
“Our agenda is heavy but I ask you not to compare it with the stone Sisiphus had to roll up the hill,” he said. “I assure you we will overcome our task.”
In a lighter moment, Clinton presented Lavrov with a mock “reset” button following Vice-President Joe Bidon’s comment that America and Russia need to reset their relationship. However there was slight embarrassment that the Americans had mispelt reset in Russian, with Lavrov claiming it read “overcharged”
