Spain has made an official protest to Britain after Princess Anne visited Gibraltar. The Princess Royal was in the colony to open a new hospital, and her trip prompted Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos to complain to his British counterpart David Miliband during the NATO talks in Brussels.Gibraltar was ceded to Britain in perpetuity by Spain in the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. But Madrid has never abandoned its sovereignty claim despite the vast majority of the colony’s 30,000 people voting regularly to remain British. In 2006 the two governments and the Gibraltar authorities signed a co-operation agreement aimed at easing tensions, which, over the years, have seen the closure of the land border between the Rock and Spain.
