French officials say President Nicolas Sarkozy, along with several of his ministers and other politicians, has received envelopes containing death threats and bullets. Sources in Paris say the offices of President Sarkozy, Justice Minister Rachida Dati and Interior Minister Michele Alliot Marie have been targeted. Other recipients include legislators from Sarkozy’s governing UMP party in southwestern France.
The latest person to receive one of the letters is former prime minister Alain Juppé: “These are the risks of the job,” he told reporters. “It is not the first time I have received threats of this kind, so I am quite calm about it. It is true that this time they say the letters were accompanied by nine millimetre bullets in the envelope. I am not going to change my routine or lifestyle for something like this.”
The brown paper envelopes containing the 9 millimetre bullets all arrived within the past two weeks. It is not clear whether the unknown author has made any specific demand or identified a stated cause.
