There are already issues that divide the new US administration and any eventual Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu. One of those is the matter of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, which the UN says violate international law. Netanyahu supports the expansion of these settlements, while Washington has opposed them. The two sides also differ over the two-state solution. Clinton has already said Washington backs a Palestinian state alongside Israel but Netanyahu has stopped short of this, evoking instead a form of Palestinian self-government. Clinton insists that rocket attacks by Palestinian militants on Israeli towns such as Sderot must stop. The question is how. With Netanyahu still trying to form his government, and with Palestinians taliking of a unity government involving Hamas, Clinton doesn’t yet know who exactly she will be dealing with.
