Hillary Clinton has reiterated America’s support for Israel on her first visit there as Secretary of State.

Tasked with sounding out the region’s leaders on the prospects for peace, she began by telling Israeli president Shimon Peres that Washington remains Israel’s ally. “It is important that the United States always underscore our unshakable, durable, fundamental relationship and support for the State of Israel,” she said. Clinton was also to meet outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Kadima party leader Tzipi Livni and the man Peres has asked to form the next Israeli government, right-wing Likud party leader Benjamin Netanyahu.
