Russians oversee tests at Iran's nuclear plant

Iran has begun key tests at its nuclear plant as part of prepartions to get the power station up and a running. It is expected Tehran will announce soon the start date for the facility, which the West fears could be used to develop nuclear bombs. Iran says it will be used solely to meet the country’s energy needs.

Russia is building the plant at Bushehr and the tests are being watched by the head of the state company involved. Serguei Kiriyenko said: “It’s a very important moment. We’ve started the process of launching the station.” Iranian officials say the work today includes simulating the injection of nuclear fuel into rods. Russia’s involvement in the project has raised tensions between Moscow and Washington. The latest development will also cause alarm in Israel, which fears it would be a target of any Iran nuclear attack.
