As in the rest of Germany, it was carnival this morning at Frankfurt’s Boerse – in a bid to lighten the atmosphere in otherwise dark economic times.

European stocks slid again in early trade this morning, echoing sharp losses on Wall Street and in Asia. By mid-morning, the FTSE Eurofirst 300 index of top European shares was down 1.8 percent at 716.30 points, a level not seen in six years. On Wall Street, the Dow Jones slid to a 12-year low on Monday, as news that the government was set to increase its stake in Citigroup failed to offset fears that a number of embattled US banks could be nationalised.
