In a scene reminiscent of Hollywood movies, two of Greece’s most notorious criminals have escaped from jail in a helicopter.
To the cheers of fellow inmates the two were air-lifted from the top security prison near Athens after climbing up a lowered rope ladder. Vassilis Paleocostas and his accomplice Alket Rizai were serving time for kidnapping and multiple armed robberies. The helicopter was eventually found abandoned but only after the two criminals had disappeared in getaway cars. This is the second time in three years the men have successfully made an aerial escape from prison. They were due to stand trial within days for their first which took place back in 2006. Greece’s justice minister has reacted angrily to the brazen break-out and has demanded the resignation of the country’s director of prisons.
