Kosovo is marking its first 12 months as an independent state.
Celebrations began with a special session of parliament in the capital Pristina, acknowledging the support Kosovo has received from other countries. Some 54 nations around the world have recognised the fledgling nation as independent. However, neighbour Serbia and its powerful ally Russia are among those who have so far refused. Today’s programme includes a so-called “independence walk” involving schoolchildren and students across the country. Kosovo’s ethnic Serbs are not celebrating though and are expected to be visited by politicians from Belgrade to underline Serbia’s continuing opposition to Kosovo’s ambitions.
